Evolve – Big Alpha

Evolve1

I got the opportunity to play Evolve in its “Big Alpha”-Event, which is currently happening. Well, officially it is but the servers must be made of paper or they invited the whole world, because I could play two games and spent the rest of my “playtime” in the lobby, chatting with the people, who were also waiting (I met some people twice which was fun) and looked at the loading screen. BUT the time I played I must say, I was pretty thrilled, especially when I played the monster (Goliath, Kraken seems to be locked at first). As a hunter you have to work as team and know your abilities and those of your teammates to succed. Sadly the fight against the monster wasn’t that hard (Must have been the first time for the Monsterplayer) and we defeated him pretty quickly. So I need another round but I think fighting a level 3 Goliath must be damn epic.
In the second round I played the monster. And that was awesome and intense! First, it’s cool to be that badass, hunting other creatures, eat, evolve, become more badass and stuff. But in my first moments I had to avoid the hunters and that was not so easy. They got me twice in my early state and I have to admit that I kinda panicked and threw rocks around me, spit fire and tried to escape. But that is so awesome because, for the hunters I really acted like a trapped animal. And this is the cool thing, in my opinion. Fighting a real player in this situation seems really intense and it could create lots of different moments. For example, I stood in a corner and could not really escape, but then I managed to take one hunter down and broke their blockade. Then I spit fire to create chaos and so I could escape. And the hunt starts again. Finally I evolved to my third form and tried to be the hunter. The last fight was pretty damn epic, but I failed. It was very close though. After that round my hand was shaking. That round was intense and awesome!
After I finished the round I realized, how well-balanced the game was. In the early state of the game the hunters were clearly stronger, but in the end I was really a threat. And as I said, the win of the hunters was really close, I could have won, if I had played with the monster before and got used to the abilities and the map. But again, I was impressed by the balance of the players. It really worked. Props to Turtle Rock Studios!
Hopefully I can play a few rounds more, because at the moment I think, there has to be more content to make the game interesting for a longer time. I don’t know how many maps are in the game. But there is pretty much one game mode, four monsters and two hunters for each class. There has to be more variety and features to make the game as popular as previous games like Left for Dead, which has still a lot of active players (including me).
But my first impression is a good one. Evolve keeps what it promises and I will look forward to February 10th, when the game is finally released.
