Uncharted 4 is the long awaited last installment in the Uncharted series. It revolves around Nathan´s long lost brother Sam, who finally returns.
The most immediately noticeable thing about Uncharted 4 are the beautiful graphics. It is by far the prettiest game of this console generation. The amount of detail is incredible. Nevertheless the game runs smoother than all of it´s predecessors. The environments look amazing and the characters too, especially during the cutscenes.
This installment added a number of new things to the franchise. Stealth is now a completely possible way to encounter enemies. You can hide in high grass and enemies can lose track of you during combat. One thing I noticed though is that the aiming controls became a lot more unprecise compared to the PS3 games.
I also think that Uncharted 4 has less of a focus on combat than earlier games. Exploration, climbing etc. is more prevalent.
These new levels focused on exploration add a lot to the experience. It makes the levels a lot more immersive because you can drive in your jeep or a boat but nevertheless exit your vehicle at any time to explore. These more quiet moments let the game really shine.
The climbing mechanics also got extended. The grappling hook makes Uncharted 4 a lot more fun and adds a little bit more depth to climbing. The other addition which comes later in the game is a climbing hook very much comparable to the climbing hook from the new Tomb Raider games. Unfortunately it not only feels uninspired it is also mechanically worse because you can use it only once in a row.
The villains in Uncharted 4 have a bit more personality this time but are other than that not very interesting. The final boss is in series tradition also pretty bad. Overall the story in this installment feels a lot more grounded (a lot of comparisons to The Last of Us have been made), especially the scenes revolving around Drake´s past are particluarly beautiful. While I like the human elements added to it, it lacks some of the more spectacular elements featured in Uncharted 2 and 3. The ending is also certainly one of the more unspectacular. Besides that it features a very heartfelt epilogue.
Uncharted 4, being the last entry in the series, had very high expectations. I don´t think that it could live up to it´s hype. The game feels somewhat different to the earlier games (in good and bad ways). For me Uncharted 2 will always remain the best entry in the series. The last installment didn´t feature anything as groundbreaking as Uncharted 2 did for it´s time instead it had some smaller extensions which also aren´t anything never seen in games before.
