Paladins is a Free2Play game on Steam and already the pictures hint that the gameplay and overall appearance reminds people of Blizzard’s famous Overwatch. But only pictures can’t really tell if this is just a cheap copy or a good game.
The creators of Paladins are the people who worked on Tribes: Ascend, that shooter on high-tech rollerblades and – more important – Smite, which is already quite famous. So they can make good games. That’s no guarantee that Paladins is good though.
When you start Paladins you can first check out the champions. Well, again we have the tank with a shield, the archer, the assassin, the sniper, … that may sound like all the heroes are copied from Overwatch, but first, they have some unique abilities and second, Overwatch didn’t invent the tank/sniper/assassin as well.
They really try to make new heroes and Smite proved that they are able to do that. You don’t have all heroes unlocked from the start though, but that’s just a Free2Play thing.
A very good thing I recognized was that Paladins is not Pay2Win. The locked hereoes are not overpowerd, there are no special items you can buy. You can unlock every hero with real money and you can buy new skins for real money. Of course. Why not? Most important part is that it’s not Pay2Win.
The gameplay is similiar to Overwatch. You have your hero with a set of abilities and an ultimate attack. You run across the map and fight other champions.
In Paladins you have to bring a cart full of explosive into the enemy base. You stay close to it and have to protect it while it slowly drives to the enemy base, kinda like in Team Fortress.
And like in Team Fortress it’s fun to play. When you play against real players (first rounds are against AI) it is really challenging and your team has to work because even a very good player can be killed quickly if a strong team with support, tank etc. stands against him.
Still, Overwatch creates the better feeling, has the more interesting heroes and is overall the better game. But Paladins doesn’t look that bad in comparison. And it’s sill a Beta, so maybe there are some major changes ahead.
Paladins is like an ‘Overwatch light’. The basic concept is the same, but it’s Free2Play so people who are not sure about Overwatch and gameplay like that could defenitely check out Paladins to get a feeling of such a gameplay. And even Overwatch players could try Paladins, play the other heroes for a while, try out their maps and the new gamemode, … pretty much like a DLC.
It’s not a competitor to Overwatch, but also not just a cheap copy. And who knows what kinds of updates this game will get.
