Running a TV sci-fi series parallel to a MMO game was developer Trion Worlds’ concept for ‘Defiance’ back in 2013. It didn’t go too well for the game, since it went Free-to-Play only about one year after release and didn’t gain much more attention since then. And now, after three seasons the series comes to an end: There won’t be no more new episodes, since ‘only’ two million people watched the last part of season 3.
While game and series were supposed to influence the events of each other, Trion Worlds stated that the MMO won’t be affected by the shutdown – it will just go on without any radical changes. That might be another bad sign for the future of Defiance, since it sounds like there isn’t enough of a playerbase that would justify the effort.
