DOOM – Review

It has been quite a while since the last Doom was released but we finally got a 4th Doom! The fastpaced
shooter is a reboot developed by id Software.

The campaign
Right from the start the game is underlining how brutal and pace based it will be. The plot begins
as you (the protagonist) find yourself chained to a table start off killing the first demons freeing
yourself. You first task is to find out what caused this demon flood and to end it. This is actually the
whole plot summed up without spoiling anything.
But keeping the plot simple is not a large disappointment since the game clearly has other
strengths.
Doom is a very different but fun to play shooter. In comparison to the typical shooter genre it is
doing many things differently. In terms of gameplay Doom is in no way similar to its genre
competitors.
The most exact description of its gameplay would be fast-paced and bloody. In contrast to other
shooter games you will not be able to regenerate your health by staying in cover. Staying in cover
is most likely the worst thing to do in this game! It is all about running and jumping across the
fighting scene while you try to get rid of as many demons as possible.
How are you generating health then? After putting a certain amount of damage into a demon it will
start lighting up in blue or orange (depending on how long it has been in this state) and you are
given the opportunity to do a so called glory kill. You execute this attack by simply meeleing the
damaged demon. Your character will do a certain move finishing the enemy what is not just
satisfying to watch but gives you health points as well as ammunition.
Further it is possible to collect health points and armor points across the map. You will most likely
find them in larger rooms which host huge battles. Every level consists of larger areas in which you
mostly have to open a gate to proceed. The larger fight scenes take place in those rooms. Many
platforms and different paths will make you jump and rush across countless hords of demons
which constantly chase you. Those places often offer specific items which make you faster,
invincible, increase your damage or make you a raging killing machine as you rip apart demons
with your bold hands. By far my favorite powerup!
During the campaign you will be able to upgrade your weapons and your armor. You do that with
points you can either find across the maps or gain during the fight.
The weapon system itself is very well created. It offers guns for any typ of players. From machineguns
over a rocket launcher, shotguns, laser weapons and shotguns is everything available. It
gives you a gun for every situation and leaves the choice to you in which way you want to bash
those demons. Moreover the fact that reloading is not needed even increases the pace of fights.
In addition I can only recommend using the special weapon. The chainsaw!
Last but not least I want to highlight the fantastic feeling this game offers. The music and sounds fit
perfectly into the very fast and bloody gameplay.

The multiplayer
Multiplayer matches are as fast in terms of gameplay as the campaign. Id Software created some
well designed maps on which you can play many team based game modes such as team death
match and capture the flag just to mention the most popular ones.
At first I had some doubt that there would be a good balance between the different weapons since
a shotgun or a machine-gun is obviously more effective than a sniper rifle in a very fast close
quarter firefight. But after playing a couple of matches I realized that it pretty much depends on
your style of playing which gun is most appropriate for you. Every gun has its pros and cons and its
your choice to make which two you pick while you can easily switch between weapon packs that
you can customize yourself.
Meanwhile the level system unlocks you different customization options. You can chose different
looks for your guns in terms of patterns and colors as well as you can design your player. There
are different types of armor which you can customize in color and patterns as well. Although these
optical changes do not improve you health or the damage you do they are a very nice feature.
Another thing that has to be mentioned is the demon rune. It appears in multiplayer matches and
transformes the first player touching it into a raging demon. At the beginning of the match you can
choose which demon you would like to become when activating the rune. Those runes appear
anywhere on the map at a given point. The player who kills the enemy demon has the chance to
become a demon hisself what gives you a reason to attack the enemy instantly if they activate the
rune instead of running from it.

Snapmap
Snapmap is actually my favorite mode. It is supposed to be the coop mode of this game and there
are things I love about it as well as two major disappointments.
Snapmap gives you the opportunity to play online with your friends on maps created by the
community. Those maps differ in various points. Some are for up to four players and some are solo
missions.
The task of the level completely depends on the creator. You got survival missions in which you
have to survive as much waves of demons as possible or you have to reach a specific point
fighting yourself through countless demons to get there as well as completely different types of
levels which you would never suggest to find in a shooter such as a sound machine level in which
you can play some beats with your friends. This widely range of different level types is definitely a
very cool feature. And for sure you can created your very own level and upload it. I am very excited
about how many awesome levels we will see in the near future.
At the main menu of Snapmap you can search for the most played, best rated or newest levels
created by others. But after a few hours playing I can say that unfortunately finding other players is
nearly a very rare event. Even the ‘ search for other players‘ function did not do the job. I mostly
ended up as a host for others to join me but it normally takes you at least five minutes until
somebody joins your lobby. I hope that this issue will be dealt with soon when more people
discover this awesome mode.
For me the biggest disappointment is actually the missing split screen feature. I am a huge fan of
playing with your friends on just one console but unfortunately most games today do not support
this idea. The Sapmap mode would perfectly work for split screen nights for you and your friends to
play on self created maps or even maps from others. I really miss the split screen i was hoping to
get.
Nevertheless Snapmap is a very fun to play mode which will make me play Doom for a longer time.

Conclusion
All in all I have to compliment Id software for a very refreshing gaming experience. After playing
countless shooter games I really enjoyed playing a completely different type of shooter with a
gameplay I have never experienced before.
Even though the campaign is lacking a really story it is very entertaining to fight through very well
designed levels. Its atmosphere and sounds fit perfectly to the fighting action and goes hand in
hand with its pace.
Multiplayer gameplay can be a lot of fun but might get boring over time and therefore Snapmap is
the ideal complement to it.
I can easily recommend this game to anyone who is looking for either a very fast shooter or just a
very different shooter in comparison to its genre competitors.
